Bone Marrow

Bone Marrow Transplant is a medical procedure performed to replace bone marrow that has been damaged or destroyed by disease, infection, or chemotherapy. This procedure involves transplanting blood stem cells, which travel to the bone marrow where they produce new blood cells and promote the growth of new marrow.

People suffering from cancers that require chemotherapy or radiation therapy need this transplant as the marrow is destroyed during these therapies.

Bone marrow Transplant types:

  • Autologous – patient's own stem cells are used.
  • Syngeneic – stem cells of an identical twin are used.
  • Allogeneic – stem cells of a related or an unrelated donor with a bone marrow match are used.
  • Umbilical cord blood contains stem cells and can be used for transplant
